FERRY ATHLETIC U16's WIN QUEEN'S JUBILEE CUP

Dateline 17 April 2011: Fairmuir Boys U16s v Ferry Athletic U16s

Having had an impeccable record at North End until the recent meeting with Hutchison Vale in the Scottish Cup semi-final, this was an opportunity for the Ferry Athletic U16s to exorcise ghosts of their last visit to the ground and resume ‘normal service - and they did so in style.

Four previous cup finals have resulted in four victories and the Ferry side were in the mood to add to this record. Having comfortably defeated Fairmuir twice in the league Ferry were regarded as firm favourites.

Ferry Athletic started like a house on fire and Fairmuir found it difficult to cope with the high tempo. Ferry got the perfect reward for their industrious opening spell when Dunn put them 1-0 up within the first couple of minutes, when he was first to react to the loose ball in the six yard box.

The early lead was doubled inside two minutes when a magnificent sweeping thirty-yard ball from Dunn picked out Irvine on the wide right. As the keeper advanced he lobbed it over him to make it 2-0.

Ferry were really buzzing at this point and with barely a further five minutes on the clock MacDonald finished it as a contest when he made it 3-0 in the first ten minutes. It was a great start, and surely it would take a monumental collapse to prevent the cup being secured by Ferry Athletic.

Wilson then slotted home number four on twenty-five minutes before Dunn scored an excellent diving header to make it 5-0 at half time.

Ferry Athletic needed to ensure they retained their discipline in the second half. However, with one eye on the following Tuesday's semi-final v Dryburgh, this terrific first half showing gave Ferry officials the chance to freshen things up and save some legs. As tends to happen though, with the game won, Ferry Athletic lost a wee bit of fluency and took their foot of the gas as the sapping heat took its toll.

However, they still managed to score a brilliant sixth when a fantastic ball worked down the left picked out Wilson, who combined well with MacDonald and this link-up play culminated in substitute Munro being set up to sweep his shot home from twelve yards.

By this stage Fairmuir’s confidence was understandably dented and a simple ball found their back four stepping out just too late, leaving MacDonald with a straight forward one-on-one opportunity with the keeper which he successfully converted to make it 7-0.

Fairmuir got a consolation late on when a fiercely struck free kick swerved viciously and deceived 'keeper Farmer on what was a very impressive Ferry debut. The first silverware of the season having been secured, the Ferry Athletic U16s can now concentrate on attempt to secure their third treble in three years.
